O Triangulo da Ribeira – Traditional Bifana in Cais do Sodré, Lisbon

If I’m in this area around late morning, I will usually end up at O Triangulo da Ribeira when I’m in the mood for a proper bifana in Lisbon. It’s tucked just behind Time Out Market in Cais do Sodré, and feels about as traditional as it gets. The space is small and hasn’t changed in years—inside, you stand at the bar to eat, or take it outside and sit in the park next door.

I go for the bifana with egg, which comes as a small omelette placed on top of the pork. The meat is cooked right there in the window and is consistently spot on—tender and full of flavour. You can add mustard or a piri-piri drizzle; the piri-piri is a bit too hot for me, so I stick with mustard. Add a 40cl Sagres on the side, and you’re sorted.

All in, it comes to around €4.80, which is hard to argue with. If you arrive after 11:30, expect to wait, but it moves quickly enough, and it’s worth it. It’s simple, no-frills Portuguese food done properly, and I keep coming back for a reason.
