Lisbon is a naturally romantic city, with its soft light, historic streets and viewpoints overlooking the river. Whether you’re visiting as a couple for a short break or a longer stay, there are plenty of simple but memorable experiences to enjoy together.
Now living in Lisbon, I’ve had the opportunity to explore both the well-known locations and some quieter spots that are just as special. Here are a few ideas if you’re looking for romantic things to do during your time in the city.
Lisbon’s many viewpoints, known as Miradouros, are some of the best places to slow down and take in the atmosphere of the city. Locations such as Senhora do Monte or Santa Catarina offer wide views across Lisbon, especially in the evening when the light softens.

Alfama is one of the oldest parts of Lisbon, and was not touched by the earthquake of 1755 and is one of the most atmospheric. Walking through its narrow streets, past small cafés and traditional houses, some of which have doors fitted many years ago. At times, it feels like you have been transported back in history, very different from the busier areas of the city.
Early morning or later in the evening is the best time to explore, when it’s quieter and more relaxed. It’s always very busy around Castelo de São Jorge from around 10am.
In my humble opinion, it’s not worth visiting Castelo de São Jorge. Suffered severe damage during the Lisbon earthquake. The current castle was heavily reconstructed in the 1930s and 1940s.
Lisbon has no shortage of restaurants, but finding the right one can make the experience more memorable and one of the romantic things to do in Lisbon. Smaller, local spots often offer a more relaxed atmosphere compared to the busier tourist areas.
