Solidó Fado Review, Lisbon

I’d walked past Solidó a few times while using the steps that connect Bairro Alto and Rossio. There are plenty of small bars and restaurants hidden away in this area, but the sign advertising live Fado and dinner caught my attention. Most visitors head to Alfama for Fado, so I was curious to see what this place had to offer.

I started with the Sardine and Tuna Pâté served with fresh bread. Being from the UK, where pâté is usually spread on toast, it felt a little unusual at first, but it was excellent. For my main course I couldn’t resist the Sardinhas. It was June, after all, right in the middle of sardine season. Paired with a couple of glasses of Quinta dos Monteirinhos white wine, it made for a very traditional Portuguese meal.

The dining room is on the first floor and has a rustic feel, with exposed stonework, traditional furnishings and views across towards Graça. As the evening progressed, the Fado began and completely changed the atmosphere. Sitting there with good food, wine and live music felt like a genuinely Portuguese experience rather than something created purely for tourists.

The staff were welcoming and happy to explain the menu when needed. I arrived early and managed to get a table without a reservation, but after speaking to the manager I’d recommend booking if you’re planning to visit for the evening Fado performances. If you’re simply passing by during the day, there’s also outdoor seating available downstairs.,
